The Seven Lady Godivas | Dr Seuss | Rare Books
In 1939 Theodor Seuss Geisel ( better known as Dr Seuss ) left Vanguard for Random House. He had one request for his new publisher — he wanted to create an “adult” book. Thus was born The Seven Lady Godivas: The True Facts Concerning History’s Barest Family, a twist on the original story of a single Lady Godiva and a Peeping Tom. His book tells the story of seven nudist sisters who, after their father’s death, pledge not to wed until each of them has “brought to the light of the world some new and worthy Horse Truth, of benefit to man.”
This isn’t the first time writers have asked to spread their wings. It’s a big reason why they will change publishers. This venture isn’t a success story for Seuss though. Out of the 10,000 printed on the first run only 2,500 were sold. Maybe it was the story, maybe it was the not-so-erotic nature of his naked ladies that kept it from flying off the shelves. Either way, we can always hope for a cult classic.
